You provide a urine sample which is analyzed for various controlled and illicit substances. You provide a breathalyzer sample which is analyzed for alcohol level. You may be interviewed and asked questions about drugs and medications that you use. Depending on the examiner's observations, you may be asked to provide other samples. Sometimes a blood sample or hair sample is also required. Depending on policy and/or whether or not the evaluation is for cause or mandated, you may be required to submit to a physical examination to make sure that you are not carrying someone else's urine sample and you might be required to urinate in the presence of the examiner to make sure that you are not trying to cheat the test. There are tests that are performed immediately on the urine sample which can detect, with an extraordinary level of accuracy, whether or not you have attempted to cheat the test. Failure in this regard generally constitutes a positive finding on the overall evaluation. If any of the analyses come back positive, the lab will automatically do backup tests which are even more reliable, and if they come back positive, you will be required to come back for an interview, at which point you can attempt to convince the examiner that the results represented a false positive.
There are many people out there that purport to provide "cleansing" services. All of these are snake-oil, i.e. bogus, and they can actually harm you. Further, many of the techniques that they might advise, can cause the initial validity test to fail, at which point you automatically fail the evaluation.
Bottom line... If you want to test negative on a drug/alcohol evaluation, simply don't do the drugs and, if you take prescription drugs, make sure you take them exactly as prescribed.
