What happens at death?

When we die, we die - we cease to exist. Ecclesiastes 9:5-6: For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

Everything else is wishful thinking.

Death is simply what the word says - - Death. It's the opposite of Life.

Before we were born, WHERE were we? Nowhere. We were NON-existent.

Genesis 3:19 says that "from dust we came - - and to dust we will return." We came from non-existence; we will return to non-existence.

The Bible does NOT teach the 'immortality of a soul' as if we were given some strange entity at birth. The Bible says that when Jehovah God created the body from dust: "the man came to be a living soul." It does NOT say that man was 'GIVEN' a soul. He BECAME a soul. The human man IS a soul. Just as the Bible states that ANIMALS ARE SOULS. Animals don't have this weird thing inside them that goes to heaven or hell. When animals die, they are DEAD, NON-existent. Likewise with human.

The Bible teaches a 'resurrection' - - 'on the last day'. Until then, we are dead. The Bible likens it to 'sleep'. When you are asleep, you are consious of nothing around you. (Until you wake up.) Likewise with death. When you die, you are conscious of nothing; until you are 'resurected' - - 'on the last day.'

So to answer the question: Nothing happens at death. You are dead, just as the word means.

Biblical Answer:

King Solomon was inspired to record this about death. At the individual's call to their resurrection (more than one in Scripture), the spirit in man is placed into a new body to await the judgement process. All past memories/actions are intact:

Ecclesiastes 12:7New King James Version (NKJV)

7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was,

And the spirit will return to God who gave it.
