Labor is in three stages, childbirth being the second stage. Beforehand, the woman's water breaks and she starts to have contractions, which pushes the baby down. This dilates the cervix. When the cervix gets to 10cm, this is when the woman can start pushing with the contractions. The baby travels through the birth canal and exits out of the vagina. Women can have different types of pain relief, including having a water birth, an epidural, and gas and air. When the baby's head comes through, this is called 'crowning'. The women keeps pushing until the baby is out, and the third stage of labor is the placenta, known as the 'afterbirth'.
Childbirth is often described as being very painful, although many women often do experience not so painful ones. Many of them have pain relief, yet some don't, as they want a natural birth as possible.
Ordinarily this happens shortly after the child's birth.
