What happens if someone damages something in a retail store?

Answer

It really depends on the store. Most chain stores will chalk it up to an accident, mark it as damaged, and move on with their day. Small businesses may do the same, but it's the "people" owned stores that may also try to make you pay for the item you broke and if you refuse to pay it could wind up with a ride in a police car. Just be careful, keep your hands and feet to yourself, and if you do accidently break something, tell someone that works there. Honesty may get you farther than sweeping it under the shelves.
