What happens when you miss your flight?

Which second leg of your flight are you considering not boarding or haven't boarded? Is it your return so in essence the final leg of your trip? If that's the case nothing happens except a seat on that flight will be empty & someone else possibly wishes to use it. Having worked for a major airline for several years nothing happens if that's the leg of your flight you're referring to. It would, of course, be great if you were to call the airline to let them know so they can let someone else use your seat on that leg.

If the second leg you're asking about happens to be on your outbound flight (your original flight) then you're basically canceling your return flight even if you booked your flight as a connection to another destination because the fare was cheaper than if you would have made your reservation to where you really want to go. If you don't board your connecting flight to wherever you've made your reservation to it's pretty much the same consequences as not having boarded your original flight. Period. The airline checks their actual passenger list as well as the reservation & if you don't board the second leg (& without further information all I can do is use that one word-ASSUME-that the seond leg of your flight is actually your connecting flight. So the airline sees that you didn't bother to continue your flight to your destination so they cancel your entire booking. They don't know your plans at all & with space so very limited on all the airlines these days they're not going to hold an empty seat for someone who doesn't show for their connection so they aren't going to let an empty seat continue for the rest of the reservation you made having no idea as to your plans. And if you think you're going to board on what would be the (4th) fourth or final leg of your flight from wherever you decided to not board for the (2nd) second leg of your journey you can forget about that plan because your seat was canceled, sold to someone else & IF there happens to be a seat available on the flight you want so you can return to your point of departure you'll be charged usually a one way fare so for those who think they've defeated the airlines fares doing what I've typed here and not having any idea as to your actual plans, the airlines will charge you one way or another, trust me! If there are a lot of seats on the final leg of your flight you may not have to pay a full one way fare but you'll have to pay penalty charges as well as the difference from the original price you paid for your ticket and that specific leg of your trip and the full one way fare. And everything I've just typed here also depends upon the type of airfare you purchased for your trip from the start!

Airline fares are a very complicated matter, believe it or not. Especially internation travel! If you're traveling further than Tokyo for example but you land in Tokyo, your fare will generally be higher than if you can land some other place before you reach your final destination. Why? Because every airport charges landing fees for every plane that touches down and Japan in general but particularly Tokyo has very high landing fees. Somewhere around $10,000 depending upon several factors and they naturally will pass those charges on to the passengers. Believe it or not, people aren't how airlines usually make their money, cargo is! But even with the various fees, charges, surcharges etc the airlines pass along to their passengers, they are still and unfortunately losing money. Hemorraghing is actually more accurate.

When a person misses their flight, the airline will let you take the next flight if it is not fully booked. If it is booked then most often they will try to find another airline flight for you.

The same as you would from any other airport, purchase another ticket. Assuming of course your ticket isn;t flexible.
