If you eat pure baking soda, you will be very unhappy--it tastes really bad--but it won't hurt you because you couldn't eat enough of it to throw your body's pH off. It will react with your stomach's acid to neutralize it, which is why people take it for indigestion. If you take a lot it might stimulate your stomach to produce more acid, or upset your digestion.
Baking soda being a common ingredient in baked goods, you've probably eaten a ton of it in things without it hurting you at all.
