What happens if you just do not pick up the phone when a creditor calls?

Well I'm sure there's a more 'legal' answer to this but from my experience; not very much. Several times now I've been threatened all sorts of things (court, bankruptcy etc) but they have never actually done anything apart from send more final demands. Which, it seems, are never final.

And reading more into your question - your right to suspect that the banks, major companies and such, with substantial political and legal power, for decades, and a very important role in business and society have made sure that the laws give them the ability they need to handle something like "if I ignore them they can't do anything and will go away". Very much the opposite. Except to a very limited degree, they don't even have any need to speak or negotiate with you about your failure to pay and breach of contract. And you certainly forfit any right to argue they didn't give you a chance or the laws/court/process should allow you any courtesy.
