If you have a tolerance for methadone and just suddenly stop taking it, you will begin to experience withdrawals such as nausea, body aches, hot and cold sweats, and diarrhea. You should slowly taper off of methadone instead of quitting cold turkey.

I have been on Methadone for four years. Methadone has it's pros and cons.

Methadone will make you extremely sleepy for the first couple of months you are on it and you cannot work or drive until you are used to it.

I do NOT suggest it's use unless you have a serious addiction to opiates or if your doctor has recommended it for pain and several other opiates have been tried for many years first. I was addicted to 8 K-4 Dilaudids per day before I began Methadone. I began opiates for pain about 7 years prior. I was anticipating being on it for only a few months...it doesn't really work like that. Methadone is a serious addiction and the withdrawl can be deadly. Many people who have gone to jail on Methadone and who have had to stop abruptly have died in jail. So if you do anything illegal in your lifestyle which may cause you to go to jail ever then I would NOT suggest Methadone at all.

I do not get high anymore from it, you stop feeling the effects after the first couple of months, you also stop getting pain relief. But I do get sick if I do not take Methadone for more than a day.

Methadone has many things against it, but if your a serious addict it will help you to live a "sober" lifestyle and it will restore much of your sanity. It has given me my life back...but I probably will be on it for the rest of my life. So, think carefullyu before begining to take it. Research Suboxen and some of the other alternatives first and if your just in need of help for pain, have your doctor try some other things first.

Methadone gets made into morphine in the liver. Morphine is a naturally occurring product in the human body. That said, it would affect the baby and too much of it could kill the fetus.

Additional info from another user:

It depends on how you are taking methadone. If you are on a maintainance program, and your body is used to the methadone, the unborn child will also become used to it. They may have NAS after they are born, which is Neonatal Abstinance Syndrome. This is where the baby goes into withdrawals. Symptoms include chills, sweating, loose stools, fever, shaking, bad diaper rash from loose stools, etc. The severity of the withdrawal IS related to how high the dose is, which is not what methadone clinics will tell you. They may recommend that you double your dose in the third trimester, citing that your body is using more methadone. If you are not experiencing any withdrawals, try to avoid going up on your dose. A baby born to a mother taking 150 mgs of methadone compared to one taking 15 mgs is going to experience longer, more sever withdrawals. Do not ask your clinic for this advice...speak to a neonatologist who has actually dealt with methadone dependent infants. They will give you sound advice.

If your body is not used to methadone and you are taking it recreationally, it can make you miscarry. Methadone is a respiratory depressant, and your baby could quit breathing. So could you!! Do not take methadone if you have not slowly built up a tolerance to it! It is a very dangerous drug, and should only be taken under medical guidance.

Please ignore first answer. If you are used to taking 200mg a day then that is what you should continue to take, at least until you have the baby. the baby can then be detoxed safely. If you are not used to taking opiates then just 30mg could kill you and the baby. If you are on a methadone maintainance program and you stop cold turkey, you just may kill your fetus. Do not rely on my word or the advice of any other person that is not a medical professional in this area. Plus, there are sites like med-line where you can get reliable, up to date studies and information on methadone and pregnancy. Don't take the word of a know-it-all that knows nothing and is quick to give erroneous advice.

It can sometimes tend to make them feel more talkative, and they are just generally happy.

It can also make them feel sluggish, withdrawn and lazy. It just depends on how long the person has been taking opiates, and how many mgs they were on.

Yes you can. It's a great way to experience this wonderful chemical. ...To elaborate... Yes you can smoke a methadone pill, BUT from experience, it is a complete waste. Smoking it gives no significant rush or high and if anything your losing precious milligrams. Methadone is a slow acting opiod and takes a while to kick in no matter how you take it.
