Best Answer

the plasma membranes water flows at an equal rate. animal cells function the best in an isotonic environment. in an isotonic environment the blood cells stay normal and do not get lyced (which happens in hypotonic environments) and they do not shrivel (which happens in hypertonic environments).

What happens when a cell is placed in an isotonic solution?

Nothing. There would be no gradient between the cell and the solution.

What happens when a solution is hypertonic?

the cell lets out water to make it an isotonic solution

In an isotonic solution what happens to the shape of the cell?

it stays the same

What happens when the concentration of dissolved substances is in the same in both the cell and the solution in which it is placed?

Isotonic solution

If a cell is dropped in any solution and the cell does not change size by either shrinking or swelling what is the solution?

isotonic

What is the solution called when the cell is in equilibrium called?

A cell that is in an isotonic solution is in equilibrium with the solution. What ions and water outside of the cell is the same as the ions and water that is inside the cell. The term -iso means the same.

What type of solution doesnt change the shape of a cell?

Isotonic does not change the shape of a cell membrane

What happens to cells placed in isotonic hypotonic and hypertonic solutions using diagrams?

In an isotonic solution the cell would be unchanged. In a hypertonic solution water would flow out of the cell and it would shrink. In a hypotonic solution water would flow into the cell and it would expand like a balloon and possibly rupture.

Does isotonic soultion cause a cell to shrink?

No. An isotonic solution would not cause a cell to shrink, because the concentration of water in the solution and inside the cell is the same. A hypertonic solution would cause a cell to shrink.

How does the shape of a cell change in an isotonic solution?

In an isotonic solution the shape of a cell remains unchanged. This is because the movement of water inside the cell equals the movement of water outside the cell.

Does isotonic mean a fluid containing salt and minerals?

If you meant an isotonic solution, an isotonic solution is a solution which contains the same concentration of solutes as the cell it is being compared to. This creates dynamic equilibrium, as the amount of solutes entering the cell and leaving the cell is the same.

A cell is in when solute concentrations inside and outside the cell are equal?
