Illegal drugs, and those not prescribed by your doctor could cause birth defects, or miscarriage. Drugs prescribed by your doctor may be in your best interest to take as it could outweigh the risks depending on your situation. You should not take any medications while pregnant without consulting your doctor. Even several over the counter medications that are commonly used may also not be safe for you to take while pregnant.

Everything that you eat when you are pregnant goes into your baby's body. So do drugs. Babies that have mother's that took drugs while pregnant often have distorted faces and develop diseases like downe syndrome and autism. When a mother drinks beer a lot while pregnant, the baby comes out drunk.

It depends on the drug in which the woman is using. Any drug use (even if legal) during pregnancy, without the consult of a dr., can be harmful to the child. Using heroin, for example, during pregnancy will cause the child to be born addicted to heroin. If the newborn lives, it will have to go through a series of treatments to ween it away from the addiction.

Everything you take in, so does the baby. There's too many things to list if you are asking about birth defects. Here's a few, though. The baby could suffer from low birth-weight, heart problems, slowed brain development, and problems down the road. If you are taking drugs, tell you doc.

In the US:

If when born the child tests positive for any controlled substance (except those prescribed by a physician such as methadone), the mother can and often is charged with delivery of a controlled substance (dealing). The child will be removed from the mother's custody and placed in foster care or with a responsible family member.

If the child does not test positive, the mother may still be charged, but it is less likely.

The fetus does as well. Anything mom puts into her body goes to the fetus. If you're using large amounts of anything it'll affect the baby, many are born with fetal alcohol syndrome, addictions to drugs etc. any of which can be harmful to the development of the fetus

Answer2: Whatever the mother eats or drinks the baby eats or drinks. I read an article that said "a particularly tragic out come of alcohol abuse is its effect on the unborn. "Alcohol is far worse for the developing fetus than any other abused drug," reports the International Herald Tribune. When a pregnant woman drinks, her developing child also drinks, and the toxic effect of alcohol is especially devastating at the formative stage of the fetus. Alcohol carries irreversible damage to is central nervous system. Neurons do not form properly. Cells are killed off. Other cells end up located in the wrong place. The result, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), is the foremost cause of mental retardation in newborns. "You don't have to be an alcoholic to hurt your baby," remarks Professor Ann Streissguth, of the fetal alcohol and drug unit at the University of Washington, "you just have to be drinking enough and pregnant." The wisest course for women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy may be not to drink any alcohol at all. (taken from 10/08/05 Awake magazine on Jehovah's Witnesses official website)

There are too many complications for any drug to list here. Please read on http://www.acde.org/parent/Pregnant.htm for all information on fetal developement vs. drug use. If you are on medications then you should be working closely with your doctor. Many women have to take some medications and their babies are just fine. If you are talking about street drugs then your baby will go through terrible withdrawals and it's not a pretty sight!
