Individual carbon dioxide (CO₂) molecules spend an average of 3-4 years in the atmosphere (the residence time), before moving on as part of the carbon cycle. However, because CO₂ leaving the atmosphere is offset by CO₂ from natural carbon sources, it takes a lot longer than this for artificial CO₂ increases to dissipate - up to a thousand years. This is called the turnover time, or the global atmospheric lifetime.
