There are no effects, so "side effects" is the wrong word. Smoking catnip will not get you high. You might as well try smoking the bits of paper from your paper shredder.

So the "side effects" (which in this case are actually the effects) would just be coughing and a bad taste in your mouth.

Cats are able to consume catnip, but ONLY in small amounts. Big amounts can cause digestion problems. The aroma of catnip is what makes them have the euphoric "high". Catnip has actually been shown to act as a sedative to cats when eaten, though they eat and chew on it to release more of the oils, so technically eating it would help enhance the euphoric high they're having. (Just might make them sleepy)

Catnip makes many cats very happy and they will roll around in it and purr. For some other cats, though, there are no effects at all, and they have to reach a certain age for it to become effective to the ones who are sensitive to it.

How can you tell if your kitten had too much catnip?

No, because catnip is harmless to cats. Some cats may vomit if they eat catnip leaves, or a large amount of catnip leaves, but that is a normal reaction when cats eat a lot of any plant. Otherwise, catnip will have no negative effects on your cat's health. It should be noted that some cats may react aggressively to catnip rather than happily. This is only because different cats respond in different ways to catnip. If your cat happens to seem angry after exposure to catnip, it does not mean that it has harmed him/her in any way.
