The diaphragm, when relaxed, is a dome shaped muscle. During inspiration, the the diaphragm contracts and flattens out. This has the effect of drawing the lungs down with it and increasing the intrapulmonary volume (i.e. the volume inside the lungs). When the volume increases, the pressure inside the lungs drops creating a partial vacuum. As the air pressure outside is greater than the air pressure in the lungs, air will flow down its pressure gradient into the lungs inflating the alveoli.
