the bullet shatters the brain and braindeath is instant, organ death is within hours to a day

death is from intracranial hemoragging if it penetrates veins or arteries in the brain from the right position, which is OFTEN the case and death from this can be within minutes to days depending on the severity (Abe Lincoln was shot in the back of the head low calibur low force and the bullet lodged behind his eye, he died 6 days later probably from hemorraging)

if the bullet has enough velocity it will shatter the brain and all body functions cease instantateously if one side is hit the hemisphere may be completely destroyed

if it hits the brain stem all body functions fail

There are four main things to consider when you're talking about gunshots.

  1. Penetration - the depth and different tissues through which the projectile passes and disrupts or destroys
  2. Permanent Cavity - essentially, the hole left by the passing projectile; missing tissue that has been destroyed by the projectile
  3. Temporary Cavity - expansion of the body tissues due to the passage of the projectile; will shrink back to normal and heal up
  4. Fragmentation - bits of the projectile, bone, or anything the projectile hit before hitting the body - these pieces act like little extra projectiles and fly throughout the body doing more damage

You can see that what happens is going to depend on more information:

  • What sort of gun did the shooting? A shotgun damages a large area, while a handgun or rifle targets a smaller area; a shotgun or handgun might have a lower projectile speed, while a rifle has a higher speed.
  • How far away was the gun? Guns lose power over distance, so closer shots are usually more damaging.
  • Which part of the body was shot? Was it an area with lots of blood vessels and nerves to be hit, or was it a muscle? Was a major organ hit? Did one of the main blood vessels get hit (this generally kills you in a minute or so)? Was a bone hit, and were fragments driven into the body?

Depending on all those things, you might end up with just a trip to the emergency room for some stitches, a long stay in hospital, or a trip to the morgue.

There's no telling. It can be immediately fatal, or only cosmetic. It's all about where the hit is.

If you fire a gun from the front of a car with the bullet going in the same direction as the car level with the ground will the bullet's speed increase?

If a bullet was fired towards the groung it would be accelerated at a rate of 9.9 meters per second2 due to the force of gravity. The time gravity would have to act and the velocit of the bullet is so great that the extra velocity would be insignificant.

How is a bullet fired from a gun?

A cartridge is that cylindrical container that has an explosive inside, a projectile (bullet) on one end, and a cap (like a match) on the other end. It is loaded in the gun. When the trigger of the gun is pulled it causes a firing pin to strike the cap on the cartridge. The cap ignites the explosive in the cartridge causing a very rapid expansion of the combustion gases inside the cartridge. The gases push on the walls of the cartridge and the bullet. The gun supports the walls of the cartridge and prevents the cartridge from deforming or tearing. But something has to give to release all that pressure. The bullet is what gives. The expanding gases push it through the barrel of the gun. If the gun is properly designed the bullet leaves the gun before the friction of the barrel starts to slow it down. If the shooter has aimed the gun properly the bullet hits the target.
