Water is a very good solvent. When an ionic compound is dissolved in water, it breaks into its contituent radical ions. say for example if you dissolve NaCl in water, then it decomposes into Na+ & Cl-

another example, when (Na)2SO4 is dissolevd in water it dissolves into two Na+ ion and one SO4- ion.
