I take it you are referring to Tetanus, in regards your question about the rusty fence.
Fears re this are a misnomer.
It is not the rusty fence that is the problem - the bacteria associated with Tetanus (Clostridium Tetanii) is found only in soil.
It does not occur or exist simply on rusty metal.
The rusty fence (or nail or whatever) simply gives the bacteria a portal of entry into the body - the rusty metal will have had to come into contact with contaminated soil itself in order to transfer Tetanus into your body.
Tetanus has a high mortality rate (25%), and is not worth mucking around with - the symptoms of fully blown Tetanus are quite horrendous.
If concerned, I'd get a shot of Tetanus Toxoid straight away.
You should re-vaccinate every 5 years.
It's worth it just for peace of mind !
Many people associate tetanus with rusty nails and other dirty objects, but any wound can be a source. Less common ways of getting tetanus are animal scratches and bites, surgical wounds, dental work, and therapeutic abortion.
