I used to play Basketball and have jammed each of my fingers several times. Usually my coach would pull the finger out if it had not repaired itself. Then I would tape the finger (individually for my thumb) and then apply ice. My mom looked it up online and I still have the link which provides a more "medical" approach to it though... http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/finger-injuries.html
I jammed my finger yesterday during my basketball game and it hurt and started swelling up immediately. it happened because i caught the ball weird and my top knuckle cracked backwards. it hurt and i still had to play another half of the game.
well depending how hard you jammed it, if you did it not as hard, it may get red. But, if you hit it REALLY hard, you may get little red specks at the tip of your finger, which is basically a little blood inside. It also may be purple.
you get toe jam!! it's a joke! yeahh!!!!!!
No but seriously what you want to do is an anatomical splint so use medical tape or whatnot to tape your toe to the one right next to it. Then, take some Tylenol and wait for it to stop hurting. Try not to walk too much if it really hurts.
For jammed fingers: Ice as soon as possible, for about 20 minutes (padding the ice so it is not against the skin. Elevate the extremities to help lessen the throbbing. Take a couple of aspirin orAcetaminophen. If the pain is persistent and doesn't seem to be responding to treatment, there is increasing localized pain, discoloration, or the fingers appear "dislocated", seek medical attention. An x-ray may be needed to rule out a fracture and the need for for more definitive medical care. You can get a brace or not if needed
Just ice it every hour for at least ten minutes.
If it gets swollen wrap some bandaging tape on it and keep it on for at least two days.

Yes, if your holding your hands wrong or if a volleyball bends your finger wrong it could break but most likely it would be a Jam instead of a break. A jam hurts but with the right care it will be better in no time.
Jam your finger in it. Or RTFM.
Make a circle with your index finger and thumb and then jam your fist into the hole. Same Thing.
If the jam is not setting properly try adding the juice of a lemon and boiling it all up again for five minutes and then re-testing the set. it You can do this by putting a spoonful or so of the jam onto a very cold plate (taken from freezer). put it back into the freezer for 10 mins. Take it out and push the surface of the jam gently with your finger -- if you see the surface wrinkling up, the jam should set and can be put into jars.
