Symptoms in general are changes in sense of well being, in body function or appearance, or in health that would suggest a recent exposure. There are no symptoms of asbestos exposure. Years after a substantial exposure has begun, a disease condition may become apparent. That is not a symptom of exposure, but it is a result of exposure.

Asbestos exposure can cause any of three primary diseases.

• Asbestosis is a scarring of the lung tissue similar in many ways to bysinosis (Brown lung - scarring caused by cotton manufacturing dust), and coal miners' pneumoconiosis (Black ling - scarring caused by coal dust).

• Mesothelioma (cancer of the lining tissue between the lung and the lung cavity)

Asbestos is a family of naturally occurring minerals, found in serpentinite and other metamorphic rock.

Because of its strength and resistance to heat, asbestos was used for insulation, heat resistant clothing, roofing and fire proofing. It was also used as an additive to ease the manufacture and application of ceiling and wall finishes, tape joint compounds, floor tiles and mastics.
