A pregnant woman's body can become "insulin resistant" or diabetic, also known as gestational diabetes. Some women have mild cases that can be treated with diet and exercies, others may have to take synthetic insulin to control their glucose levels during pregnancy.

Other major contributing risk factors for gestational diabetes are:
- Family history of type 2 diabetes (that is mother/father having diabete type 2)
- Gestational diabetes during prior pregnancy
- Already diagnosed as pre-diabetes
- Obese or over weight.
