In eons past earth warmed and cooled for a variety of reasons, most notably due to long term oscillations in orbital periods known as "Milankovitch Cycles."

At the present time global warming is due primarily to the consumption of fossil fuel. Humans release over 30 billion (30,000,000,000) tons of CO2 into the atmosphere from the oxidation of fossil carbon (primarily coal and petroleum) each year, where this heat trapping gas accumulates.

There are no natural causes of global warming. What is natural is the greenhouse effect. The earth's carbon cycle and water cycle have supported a greenhouse effect in the atmosphere, which has kept the planet warm for as long as life has existed. This is natural, but it is not the global warming that is concerning the world.

The overall natural causes are solar variation and an effect known as the Milankovich effect. These are the two processes that have caused major changes over the last several warming cycles similar to this one.

A:The natural process that may lead to global warming is the greenhouse effect. With greenhouse gases in balance this process keeps the earth warm. With greenhouse gases unbalanced, that is when carbon dioxide is only added (and not removed by the carbon cycle) then we have the advanced greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.

Why does global warming decrease temperatures?

True global warming does not decrease temperatures. So, either the model for global warming's effects is hokus-pokus, or global warming as presently claimed, does not exist. Some global warming followers will have you believe that global warming makes the weather "act crazy". If true, then it is not really global warming, is it.
