What do Easter Bunnies have to do with Easter?
At Easter time around the world, the myths and tales abound
Of altruistic critters spreading chocolate gifts around.
You may well query what it is these creatures have to gain,
That each year they embark upon a generous campaign
Of bringing chocolate eggs to all the children of the world.
(The mysteries of such a feat have yet to be unfurled.)

The best known donor surely has to be the Easter Bunny.
The very thought, you must admit, is really rather funny -
What does a rabbit have to do with chocolate Easter treats?
It cannot lay an egg and it does not delight in sweets.
So if we must insist on using mammals to dispense
Our chocolate eggs, at least we should examine relevance.
************
What furry friend would be perhaps more suited for the task?
Australia tried bilbies: what's a bilby, you may ask?
A bilby's a marsupial and not a monotreme:
It's no more capable of egg production, it would seem.
An Easter platypus, perhaps, would even be quite nice,
Or seasonal Echidna: spiky, but it would suffice.
************
But that's all of the egg producing mammals on the land.
What else lays eggs? What else could give the Easter Bun a hand?
An easter chick, or maybe something larger, like a stork -
But storks deliver babes, not eggs: that really wouldn't work.
An Easter snake? It may have trouble with the distribution -
The absence of prehensile limbs prohibits this solution.
************
An Easter lizard: that may be a possibility -
Its qualities are suited to the task, you must agree.
It does lay eggs, it's nimble, and an excellent selection,
For camouflage protects it from immediate detection.
So I propose the Easter Bunny now should be dethroned.
A chocolate-bearing bunny never should have been condoned.
