Cactus can survive in hot, dry places because they have developed special abilities that allow them to conserve the water they do receive and make it last a long time. Most cactus have extensive, shallow root systems that allow them to soak up any rainfall that may come their way.
It's skin does not allow much tranpiration, or loss of moisture. It is also believed that spines (thorns) shade the plant's surface. Many also have extensive and deep root systems or large root masses that collect water efficiently and store it.
They aren't affected much by heat just because they are use to it. They survive the dry by conserving water that they get and using it in tiny proportions.

Xerophytes: plants that are adapted to live in very dry climates
Animals or plants that have adapted to temperate climates have certain behavior patterns. Plants and animals in a desert for instance have adapted to use of low volumes of water and extreme heat.

Just the same as any other flowering plants. Plants adapt to their environment by evolution some cactus are plants adapted to dry conditions.

The giant cactus would not survive in the British climate because they are adapted to grow in the arid areas.

Very few plants can survive the harsh environment of the desert. The cactus has well adapted to this dry and arid habitat. Wild flowers also are surprisingly abundant as well.

Scrape the pears into a big pile and add dry molasses. You will have created one of the best composts. To prevent them from growing back, improve the soil with humate, compost, molasses and organic fertilizers (make sure you don't break bits off and leave them lying there - they WILL re-grow)
