  • New Year's Day - January 1st
  • Valentine's Day - February 14th
  • Shrove Tuesday (a.k.a. 'Pancake day') - usually the second Tuesday of February. While primarily a Christian holiday, it is celebrated widely by other people due to the love of pancakes (We call crepes 'pancakes').
  • Mothering Sunday - usually second Sunday of March
  • Good Friday - usually first Friday of April. Again, primarily a christian holiday, Good Friday is a 'bank holiday' therefore nearly everyone gets the day off work.

  • Early may bank holiday - first Monday of may.
  • V.E. Day - 8th May - celebration of Victory in Europe (The formal acceptance of Nazi surrender in World War II)

  • Summer bank holiday - Last Monday of August.

  • Guy Fawkes Day - remember, remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
  • Remembrance Sunday - the Sunday nearest the 11th November - remembering those who have given their lives in service to the country's armed forces, as well as those who currently/have served.

In medieval times, a festivity was given by the monarchy prior to Lent. Ceremonies were held for new knights; drafting them into service for the King. The landed gentry rode through the countryside giving out cake, coins, and other trinkets to the peasants.

A carnival season was celebrated in England until the Nineteenth century. It incorporated fertility rites and ball games which usually ended in riots; due to the mixture of pancake feasts and alcohol.

Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday is still a tradition in the United Kingdom. Pancake races and pancake tossing are still popular.
