This is a recipe I found that works well. flea shampoo Mix together 2/3 c water, 1/3 c Dawn, 1 tsp cooking oil (any kind as long as it's liquid), 2 tbsp aloe (any kind as long as it's at least 99% pure), a few drops each of lavender and rosemary essential oils (optional). I found it's easiest to use if you put it in a squirt bottle. I use a Bug Juice bottle, but any sports bottle will work. It gives you a free hand to hold the cat with.

I have found that the Dawn with bleach alternative works best at killing fleas. The oil is to prevent the Dawn from drying out their skin. The aloe soothes bites and heals them. The lavender and rosemary repell the fleas and helps prevent reinfestation. You need to leave it on as long as possible before rinsing. 5 minutes is the recommended time, but 1 minute will kill most of the fleas. If 30 seconds is all your cat will allow, it will kill many, and is better than nothing. I suggest you have the washer filled with water and ready to go, hot water is best. You will want to put the towels in emediately because they will be filled with fleas that aren't quite dead but want to escape the cat. Your clothes may need to be added as well if any fleas jump on you. Another thing that works to help get rid of fleas is rosemary tea. Simmer rosemary in water, about a tsp per cup of water for dried rosemary. With fresh rosemary, you may need more. When the water has turned a yellow/brown, like a weak tea you would drink, strain it and let it cool. Put this in a spray bottle and use around the house. I spray furniture, carpets, beds, and even the cat in between baths. You will need to spray once a week until the fleas are gone. Lavender and mint both repell fleas, but not as good as rosemary and they don't kill the fleas. The tea works great, but won't kill eggs so it could take a couple of months to get rid of them all. If the infestation is really bad, the shampoo can be sprayed around the house the same way as the rosemary tea. There is nothing in it that could hurt you or your pets, and it even kills eggs. I wouldn't spray directly on the cat without rinsing, or it may get diarreah from licking it off.

A simple homemade flea killer can be made using vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with half apple cider or white vinegar and half water. Mix well and spray it on your pet. Fleas do not like vinegar and will be repelled. They will also die if they remain and can be combed out of the fur.

Buy a box of 20 mule team Borax powder (the kind used for laundry) and sprinkle all around and on your soft surfaces (carpets, sofas, under the mattress etc). Use a broom to work the powder into the carpets and give it at least an hour. (I did this before bed and then vacuum in the morning) Vacuum up the powder and repeat this every two days for 2 weeks. The eggs are surrounded by a hard 'shell' that is almost impossible to penetrate and they don't hatch unless there is a food source (you or your pet) ...so daily vacuuming (everywhere) will signal to them that their food is close and it's good to hatch (it's the vibrations). I was told by an exterminator that fleas, upon dying, will breed to save their species. They can breed as early as 3 days of age- so what your doing here is killing them before they can complete their cycle. (you will see more the first few days and then a dramatic decrease by day 6) Use borax with your rug cleaner next time you wash your carpet and upholstery- this creates a toxic barrier that helps prevent them in the future.

Can baking soda kill fleas on cats?

yes baking soda is safe, as is talcum powder or baby powder. Both substances are good home remedies for killing fleas on your pet ... the powders will smother the fleas. When applying either powder, apply to the animals head first, which will prevent fleas from running towards the head as the powder is applied elsewhere.

What liquid can kill fleas?

Well my cat had fleas about a two months ago and I was very surprised at the amount of flea and tick killers there where around the place. If you look in pet stores or even a supermarket you should find a range of different sprays and powders to kill them. You will probably need to repeat spraying several times because they will just keep growing and laying eggs.

Where can you buy boric acid for homemade insecticide?

You can buy Boric Acid in Wal-Mart and similar stores. It is usually in the first aid section. Do not buy Borax, which is not the same thing and will not kill fleas.

What are the little black bugs on chickens?

Most likely fleas. Hens get fleas and should be given an area with sand and gravel to take a "bath" in. There are plenty of flea powders available to add to the sand /bath area which will help kill off the fleas and not harm the chickens. Additionally, the chicken coop and roosting areas should be treated at the same time to ensure no re-infestation occurs.
