The parathyroid gland secretes the hormone
parathormone or
parathyroid hormone (PTH).
The function of PTH is to increase the concentration of calcium in the blood. It does this in three ways:
- increasing the release of calcium from the bones
- increasing the reabsorption of calcium from the kidney tubules
- increasing the absorption of calcium from the intestine
PTH is a polypeptide hormone, made up of 84 amino acids.
