Not sure about the 60s, but the Milford Plaza hotel on 8th Ave. b/n 44th and 45th currently sports a large "M" on its roof. It's a pretty old hotel, so it may be the same one. It was the Hotel Manhattan. In fact,I remember an attempted suicide with a person threatening to jump from the top of the "M" sign when it was under the Hotel Manhattan ownership.
