That will remind the dog that they are not an alpha in this family pack and they will eat when the alpha (the owner) says so. Another point to add - dogs should never eat before humans or at the same time as humans. They should get their meal AFTER the humans have finished theirs, in order to keep the pack hierarchy balanced (and therefore stop the barking).
