The ten commandments are moral guidelines, rules by which to live your life. If you don't follow them, don't worry about God. You're already a bad person. I mean honestly, is it THAT difficult to not kill someone? To not have covet your neighbor's things and to not steal? If you have difficulty with basic moral decisions, this question is over your head.

Others examine each circumstance that they come to and determine al logical approach to it. In addition it is necessary to follow the societal rules of the culture you live in whether you agree with them or not.
A person with one of the prepacked sets of rules, a person who works through each event with situational ethics, or one who blends in with societal norms regardless of his beleif in them all can lead acceptable lives and cannot be differentiated one from the other by casual inspection.
