You go to jail or prison depending on what law was broken or how serious the offense was. Usually you go to a court and the judge will either give you bail, community and service, or sentence you to jail/prison time.

Depending on what, why, and who the cop is but lets just say in general the smallest thing would be a "Dont do that again" for small petty stuff then you have warnings then its a ticket, then jail time for a misdemeanor which could be a few hours or a few days up to a few months, then for felonies prison becomes your home for years and above that if your state allows it they can put you to death (corporal punishment )

The rule us law enforcers use is that not knowing the law does not mean that you are not subject to it. If you are caught you will be prosecuted. If you break a law accidentaly you will not be given a break because of your ignorance.

Additional: In order for a criminal offense to have occurred, TWO elements must be present.

(1) the Criminal act,

(2) committed with a criminal intent.

BOTH those elements must be present. If you truly "accidentally" broke the law, it negates the element of criminal intent. In order to be convicted the prosecution must PROVE that you had a criminal intent when you committed the act.

The bravest among us might consider standing tall and turning oneself into the police.

Lawyers among us would likely recommend hiring an attorney, first, who can advise you what to do and how to go about your decision.

However, a larger percent of the population would hide their bad act(s), bury their guilt (if any), and lie about it.
