1080i is a signal format. Although most HD televisions have a display resolution of 1080 lines, this is different to the signal format of an incoming signal. When a television reports a signal format, it refers to the incoming signal. That is something outside the control of the television and is nothing more than an indicator.
If the incoming signal is SD, then the television will report 480i or 576i. Whatever the incoming signal format, the television will reformat the image so that it can be displayed on the television screen, whatever the screen resolution is.

yes but can you play 1080 i through component on newer discs? supposedly im reading with the upconverters and newer discs you cant to prevent pirating its only possible on dvi and hdmi. The compatibilities are that blu ray disc basically will play in a blu ray player in 1080i on a 1080i hdtv !, I figured out today that, that is the answer to this question because I own a blu ray player set to play 1080i blu ray discs and I baught pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2 and 3 on blu ray today and saw all of them and they all work on a 1080i hdtv with a blu ray player set to play in 1080i instead of 1080p because I don't have the newer version of the sony bravia hdtv which is the 1080p, what I have is a sony bravia 1080i hdtv!. I hope this answer helps other people out who where in my same situation! with hdtv and blu ray player hooked up together.

It uses 1920 x 1080 pixels and the image is created by a single pass of the screen from the top to the bottom of the image. Contrast this with 1080i which requires two passes of the screen from top to bottom to create a full and complete image. 720p and 1080i are the two formats used for broadcast at present. 1080p is found in local sources such as games consoles and Bluray discs but not yet in live broadcasts. Any HDTV will handle any of the HD formats without any user set up required.

Just put the blu ray disc in and play it if your hdtv is already set at 1080i and so is your blu ray player and then it will play it with the 1080i picture and sound and I garentee you it will work and it'll be like having your own mini theater in your own home that you control ! =). Is 720 p for a LCD okay?
720 p is a decent resolution for HDTV but most people either watch TV in 1080i (common) or 1080p, (usually for sports or high action programming).

It has capability of 720P and 1080I HDTV, but does not have a TV turner to receive the signal and falls into the category of HD ready. It also is not 1080P the highest HD currently available.

No that feature is for the PS3 and it is in 1080p resolution if your playing the movie on a 1080p hdtv, with an HDMI chord (I don't know if component cables play in 1080 or just 720)
