What did Indira Gandhi do that was important?

Several important events occurred during Gandhi's life. Specifically, he lead the movement for India's independence from Britain, he fasted for expanding women's rights and the rights of abolishing the 'untouchable' cast.

Alternative answer. He became internationally famous for his acts of passive resistance. Ghandi encouraged the use of non violent, non aggressive 'sit ins' to bring attention to various causes. He would sit down in front of a government building usually in the way, to protest a political/social event. He also sat down in roads, railways all sort of places and when the authorities went to move him he just stayed in the sitting position and was carried off as if still sitting. He advocated peace and total non violence and his 'sit ins' became used by young people in m,any other countries who employed the 'sit in'.
