I was on here also looking for what was considered the best tattoo ink, not for career advice. Who said this guy was a "scratcher", just because he didn't get an apprenticeship? I learned how to sling ink in prison from some of the best artists you will ever see, and not one of them ever went through an apprenticeship. As a matter of fact, I'd bet their skills against 95% of the artists in your so called "world of tattooers"! Get off your high horse, your not in a secret club of elite members, Geez! That being said, I don't need an apprenticeship, I know how to tattoo, I'd just like to get away from making my own ink. Its takes a long time and I'd like to start using more color in my work. It varies from person to person and shop to shop. There is no single great tattoo ink, I personally have three tattoo inks in me and they have all yielded satisfactory results.

It all depends on what the artists uses to mix the ink. Usually it's made by the artist themselves, so it varies.

There's the ground material of pigment for each color and then the liquid to make the color all even. Which is why the bottle is shaken before use, to make the color even and distribute everywhere.

Black has carbon in the liquid, red has iron oxide, etc.

Usually mix water with my ink and then assorted minerals, metallic salts and then sometimes vegetable dye for a specialty color.

I spent 3 years as an apprentice, not only being taught how to tattoo, but the business end as well. on the subject of ink making... i was taught to mix the pigment with witch hazel,a few drops of rose water as the rose water helped the pigment achieve a "homogeneous" suspension. now the trick is the last ingredient, witch happens to be VEGETABLE GLYCERIN !!! 2-3 drops per ounce gives the ink the"wet look", like you were wanting you end result to look like a "magazine slick". If you end up not enjoying making your ink or it just doesn't come out like you want it to, may i recommend my personal favorite brands of inks. I use Eternal,Star Bright,and as well a seldom heard of but great ink is manufactured my a company called Permapro.

I never really liked Star Bright. The only colors they make that turns out pretty well is there Red and white. On all the other colors I like to use Precision Ink from Tucson, AZ

Honestly man,

There is NO "best" household ink, as a tattoo artist, i would suggest only either getting a professional tattoo or get a friend with a kit (and professional ink) to do it, the reason being, most inks and dyes you can buy that you might think sound suitable (even non-toxic inks), can actually give you blood poisoning/staph infection, just to name a couple of illnesses that may occur, tattoo inks are usually either water,plastic, or metal based, even these pro inks may cause allergic reactions and skin problems, so use good judgment and reasoning when thinking about tattoos, remember, your body is your temple, so treat it with respect!!!

Different artists have different preferences, and different opinions, but for my money and for the tattoos that I do, I most often champion either: Eternal, Star Brite, or Kuro Sumi. There are A LOT of crappy inks on the market, too many to name, so stick with the three that I just mentioned. A lot of times the price of the ink for how much you are getting will say a lot about the quality thereof. The prices of these inks sometimes detracts people from getting them, but the FIRST rule of tattooing that you will learn is that cheap gear gives cheap results. This extends to everything ranging from machines (NOT guns!), ink, power supplies, etc.
