A brightly-colored insect can afford to be flashy and visible because there is a good chance it is poisonous or otherwise bad to eat. An insect that blends in with its surroundings, i.e., black, green, or brown, is more likely to be good to eat, since it has to hide. However, this is not always true in the cases of a black widow spider and a brown recluse!
