New Order are the band that Joy Division became after the death of Ian Curtis in May 1980. They started as a three piece band, Sumner (guitar, synth, vocals), Hook (bass and vocals) and Morris (drums). The recorded their debut single as a three piece band before Gillian Gilbert joined to play guitar and synth back up as Sumner couldn't play guitar and sing at the same time!
If i was in this situation i would play the song even if i don't like it, just to make others happy. If the band doesn't like it then they should suck it up and realize the joy in making others happy, even if it's not quite their favorite song.
