A seismometer or seismograph.

Please see the related question for information on how seismologists use them to find the epicentre of an earthquake.

Also please see the related link for more information on seismometers.

There are two instruments, which are basically the same thing. There is the seismograph , and a more specific tool measures the waves on what is called the Richter scale. Earthquakes are given a number from one to ten, ten being the strongest. The strongest earthquake that their ever was, was measured a 9.3.

A seismometer can be used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake.

Seismograph is another Greek term from Seism - "the shakes" and Graphos - "I draw". It is often used for seismometer, though it is more applicable to the older instruments in which the measuring and recording of ground motion were combined than to modern systems, in which these functions are separated. Both types provide a continuous record of ground motion; this distinguishes them from seismoscopes, which merely indicate that motion has occurred, perhaps with some simple measure of how large it was

Other answers

The Moment Magnitude scale measures earthquake intensity using seismometers.

A seismometer (the old fashioned term was seismograph).

Earthquake magnitude is reported using the Moment magnitude scale which has now replaced the Richter or Local magnitude scale.

The seismometer measures it, and the seismograph records it.

The richter scale is used to detect the earthquakes. The richter scale is machine that when vibrations occur it is registered with a pin onto a thick paper like surface. The recorded markings show how intense the earthquake is by showing longer strokes for the vibrations. For example, music is shown the same way with higher and louder frequencies. Earthquakes are not 'found' they are detected in certain regions. For example the Christchurch earthquakes are caused because the New Zealand sits on a fault line. The fault line runs directly below the country making it prone to earthquakes.
