The Chaffee tank is supposedly the first to gave a gyrostabilized gun, allowing it to shoot while moving, but it did not enter combat until early 1945, much too late for the British victory at Second El Alamein in late '42. Possibly, the Sherman may have been the first to have power traverse and elevation for the gun instead of moving them by hand cranks. If such is the case, the Sherman would still have needed to stop in order to fire accurately, but the use of power for this task would have made it easier on the crews by the muscle energy saved. It was a drawn-out battle in which the Allies wore down the Axis until they could no longer hold the El Alamein Line, and powered aiming would have given the Sherman an advantage in such a battle.
