If you mean a RAW file, it is used in Photography because it holds more information then a JPEG and it doesn't "correct" it like a JPEG. It saves the photo like you have saved it. That is why you should shoot RAW files, but if you don't have photo shop or adobe reader, you will probably struggle to view the photo, so make sure you can convert them on your computer before you go out shooting.
RAW is a type of image capture with Digital SLR cameras. It allows much more manipulation on the computer after the image is taken and often higher quality as it is uncompressed, unlike JPEG pictures which are largely compressed by the camera. As a trade-off they take up more space, and require more post-processing time, but can have better results.
