∙ 8y agoThe phrase "has a relationship" (with or to) can mean various things in different contexts. We first think of human relationships. I have a relationship with my mother as her daughter; she has a relationship to me too. Before, human family relationships always meant biological ties to someone, but now, it can be an emotional connection even if unrelated by blood. People nowadays also say relationship when they just mean they are dating a person; before, it meant a long term relationship, like marriage.
However, this phrase applies to more things than just human relationships. For examples:
- temperature and water have a relationship in making ice
- high temperature and moisture have a relationship in making rainstorms and thunderstorms
- light, sun, and water have relationships in making a plant grow
Scientists study whether X has any direct relationship to Y, or what else explains (or disputes) the supposed relationship. For example, a big societal issue is teenage delinquents and misbehavior. If you found that 18 of 20 teens come from poor families, it is faulty to then say 100% of teen delinquency is because of poverty. *Many factors are involved. So scientists mentally draw relationships from data, then seek to prove or disprove those relationships between A & B (on any topic). Another example: Do adults not vote because of political apathy or what... what are the factors and do any of the factors have any relationship to another factor.
