A OTH is the most severe form of administrative discharge. This type of discharge represents a serious departure from the conduct and performance expected of all military members. OTH discharges are typically given to service members convicted by a civilian court in which a sentence of confinement has been adjudged or in which the conduct leading to the conviction brings discredit upon the service. It can also be given as the result of certain civil hearings, like a divorce for adultery. OTH discharges can be accepted in-lieu of court-martial proceedings at the service-member's request. Persons facing OTH are guaranteed, by the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the right to have their discharge heard by an administrative discharge board, which is similar to a court-martial but is not a public forum.

Recipients of OTH discharges are barred from reenlisting into any component of the Armed Forces (including the reserves), and are normally barred from joining the Army National Guard or Air National Guard, except under rare circumstances which require exception-to-policy waivers. As of September 2006, all 50 states had policies barring the reenlistment of UOTHC discharge recipients.

In addition, the majority of veterans' benefits are not available to individuals who receive an other than honorable conditions discharge, including the Montgomery GI Bill and (in most cases) VA healthcare benefits.

A bit more...When I was in the military, the term generally used for an other-than-honorable discharge was "General" ... which meant that no great harm was done during the person's service, but that the service was not really up to expected standards.

The most severe form of administrative discharge, of course, is "Dishonorable." That is reserved, generally, for criminals, traitors and deserters.

An Under Other Than Honorable Conditions (OTH) characterization of service is the least favorable non-punitive characterization of service, and is normally recieved as a result of administrative separation due to some sort of misconduct.

An OTH is warranted when a member engages in conduct involving one or more acts or omissions that consitute a significant departure from the conduct expected of members of the armed forces. This characterization can be quite prejudicial in civilian life as it can deprive the member of virtually all veteran's benefits based upon the current enlistment, and the member can expect significant prejudice in situations where the type of service rendered or the characterization of discharge may have a bearing such as government employment etc. Go to the Military Discharge Upgrade Consulting page on Facebook to ask further questions and discuss your specific case free of charge. Receiving an OTH does not automatically disqualify you from Veterans benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Many members with an OTH receive full benefits and support from the VA.

No. You can appeal the discharge, and you might be able to have the nature of your discharge changed, but the chances are lower than what is commonly believed. If you don't get your discharge changed, it'll remain on your service record.

You cannot own a firearm with a dishonorable discharge, which is the most severe discharge there is. However, a "less than honorable" is not the same as a "dishonorable" discharge. If the discharge resulted from a court martial, and the service member was convicted of a crime that would be a felony (punishable by a year or more in prison) then you should consult an attorney for legal advice.
