AVI stands far audio-video interleave, and is a digital video format developed by microsoft in the early 90's that divides a video file's data into chunks, which helps to keep the audio and video synchronized. The actual compression type used in the AVI file can be any, including MP2 and MP4 (via Xvid and DivX).
