An anime is the Japanese word for an animation. The first anime was Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki (also known as Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors) and was created in the early 1900s.
Many anime and manga productions, comic strips that became anime, feature both eastern concepts as well as western, from religion to culture, from technology to superstitions. They tend to be more story-involved and run a longer general plot over an entire series, where as cartoons in America generally have a small plot over the course of one episode and each episode is a different story, and related only through the cast of the same characters presented.
These characters created through manga animations, are often very detailed and show more "life" in their animation then American cartoons. To be more exact, American cartoons are just simple lines and curves, drawn out so that they would be quick to produce, unlike the Japanese manga/anime where they draw out every line carefully to make sure they get each form of expression on a character's face or even the wrinkles or pleats in a character's clothing. They also have more connect ability with viewers, as in viewers can relate to them more personally.
In Japan, an anime is more than just a "cartoon". Anime creates millions of jobs every year in the form of voice actors, animators, character designers, singers, composers, retailers, publishers, video game manufactures and designers, comic artists, magazine companies, and so much more. Every toy company making hundreds of millions of yen (millions of dollars) in sold merchandise every month. It is an industry like no other, singers and many others start their careers with anime. It greatly surpasses our live-action movies, television shows, and music put together in popularity. You could almost go as far as to say that Japanese business and society revolves around anime, and vice versa.
Also I'd like it to be known that unlike in America, anime is not just for kids. In fact they weren't intended at first to be for kids but actually for teenagers and adults. Now a days Anime caters to all audiences from little children to the elderly and everyone in between. Even in America cartoons never used to be for kids. Just look at all the old Bugs Bunny cartoons. But for some reason in modern American culture, cartoons are now seen as being only for kids.
Oh, and by the way, Manga literally means comic and Anime comes from French and means animation. Just so one knows the difference.
There are several very popular Japanese anime that have been translated into over five or six different languages for better understanding around the globe. Some of these languages include English, Spanish, Chinese, and French.
