"For the child there should be Aqiqah, on behalf of the child make sacrifice and remove the hair." -- Hadith (Bukhari)

To offer the aqiqah or sacrifice for a newborn child is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (saws). An aqiqah involves the sacrifice of two animals for a boy and one for a girl, with a portion of the meat to be distributed to the poor and needy. An aqiqah can be offered at any point after a child's birth, but it is recommended to perform it within the first week (and ideally on the seventh day). In addition, it is the recommended Sunnah for parents to give sadaqah of equal value to the weight in silver of their baby's hair (when it is shaved on the seventh day after birth).

Aqiqah Pack:

The Aqiqah Pack encompasses both these aspects and includes:

  • The sacrifice of one or two aqiqah animals (depending on sex) distributed to the poor and needy, including orphans and the elderly.
  • The value equal to the weight in silver of your child's hair distributed to the needy as sadaqah.*
  • An official Aqiqah Certificate for your records.
  • Feedback photos of the aqiqah animal.

Muslim parents do not traditionally hold a "baby shower" prior to the child's birth. The Islamic alternative is the aqiqah, which is held after the child is born. After the birth of a child, Muslim parents often host the aqiqah, or welcoming celebration, at their home or a community center. The aqiqah is an optional event designed to celebrate the child's birth and welcome him or her to the community. There is no religious consequence for not holding an aqiqah; it is a "sunnah" tradition but is not required. The aqiqah is always hosted by the parents or extended family of the newborn child. In order to provide a community meal, the family slaughters one or two sheep or goats. One third of the meat is given away to the poor, and the rest is served in a large community meal with relatives, friends, and neighbors. Many guests bring gifts for the new baby and the parents. The aqiqah is traditionally held on the seventh day after the child's birth, but may also be postponed until later. The aqiqah is the Islamic alternative to the baby shower, which in many cultures is held before the child's birth. In addition to prayers and well-wishes for the baby, the aqiqah is also a time when the child's hair is first cut or shaved, and its weight in gold or silver is given as a donation to the poor. This event is also when the baby's name is officially announced. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as a naming ceremony, although there is no official procedure or ceremony involved. The word aqiqah comes from the Arabic word 'aq which means to cut. Some attribute this to the child's first haircut, while others say that it refers to the slaughtering of the animal to provide meat for the meal.

Aqiqah, in Islamic terminology, is defined as the animal that is slaughtered on the occasion of child birth.

The performance of Aqiqah is highly encouraged. It is to be performed by the parents or the guardians of the child. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions used to perform Aqiqah when they were bestowed with a newborn.

When Should Aqiqah be Performed?

The best time to perform Aqiqah is on the seventh day after the birth of the baby.

What is the Purpose of Aqiqah?

There are many benefits in the performance of Aqiqah. One is the announcing the birth of the baby. Being bestowed a child is a great blessing from the Creator. Another purpose is inviting family members, neighbors, and friends to celebrate the blessed occasion. The poor should be included in the celebration by offering them food and meat served on this occasion.

Types of animals to be slaughtered

The following is a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) where he advised Aqiqah a goat/sheep.

Narrated Umm Kurz: The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Two sheep which resemble each other are to be sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl. (Sunan Abu Dawood Book 15, No. 2830)

The condition of the animal for aqiqah

The condition of the animals in Aqiqah is the same as the conditions for the animals in Qurbani. The animals to be slaughtered must be a goats, cows or camels. For camels, it must be older than 6 years, for cows the age must be older than 3 years and for goats, it must be older than 2 years. Aqiquqh is a thanks giving sign. If a son is born to a person, he slaughters two goats and distribute the meat among the poor. If a daughter is born one goat/sheep is slaughtered and the meat is distributed among the poor. Preferably it should be done on the seventh day of the birth, however it may be done anytime.

The word you are looking for is 3aqida (عقيدة) and it refers to a statement of belief or creed. It can be used for both overarching beliefs, such as belief in Islam in general, or it can be used for a specific tenet, such as belief in offering 2.5% as zakat.

The way that the question is asked illustrates one of the failures of Arabic transliteration. The "c" at the beginning of the word is used in some transliterations of the letter "ayin" (ع) which has no equivalent sound in English. (The best approximation of an "ayin" in English would be to say that it gutteralizes the vowel that comes after it, making the vowel sound as if a wheezing grandmother is saying it.) Some use a small floating "c" to indicate this. Some, like me, use the number "3" to indicate this. However to pronounce this word as "ka-ki-da" would result in nobody understanding the word at all. It would be far better (assuming that you cannot pronounce the "ayin") to just read the word as "aqida".

What is the fastest growning religion in the world?

It depends entirely on how the question is read. If the question is asking what is the largest religion that is still growing, the answer would be Christianity since there are more and more Christians born and converted every day than convert out or die. If the question is asking what religion is growing by the largest numbers of new followers (both births and converts), then the answer would be Islam, since the population growth in Muslim-majority countries has made Islam the religion with the most new adherents daily. If the question is asking what religion has the greatest percentage of growth, then this would be a contest between a number of very small religions which have high percentage increases, but low current population counts, such as Baha'i or Jehovah's Witnesses. Although these cannot match the numerical growth of Christianity or Islam, the thousands of converts and newborns have a much higher relative to the <20 million adherents to the religion.
