Rio de Janeiro is Brazil's most famous city even though BrasÃÂlia is world famous for its architecture and São Paulo is world famous as an economic center. Specifically, Rio receives the most visitors annually in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2008 2.82 million people visited Rio.
Rio is the location of cherished Brazilian landmarks such as Copacabana Beach, O Cristo Redentor [Christ the Redeemer], and Pão de Açúcar [Sugarloaf Mountain]. The city is a thriving architectural, cultural, economic and financial center. In 2016 Rio will be the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics.
The largest New Year's celebration in Brazil takes place at Copacabana Beach. Several million celebrants watch one of the largest fireworks display in the world.
Rio is a city of superlatives that lives up to its civic anthem, 'Cidade Maravilhosa' ['Marvelous City'].
