  • A lathe is a device that turns a work piece on a spindle. Cutters are used to make cylindrically symmetrical pieces (think of table legs).

In general, NC (numerically controlled) machines are those in which the position of the cutting head, speed of the spindle, and feed rate of the cutter to the work piece are all controlled by a set of coordinates that are programmed into the machine.

The term CNC (or computer numerically controlled) typically indicates that the desired cut shape is programmed into a computer as a series of splines (curves that a computer can represent as a formula). The computer then translates the splines into position coordinates, and uses those coordinates to feed the machine.

NC and CNC machines can be many numbers of different types. They can be lathes, mills, saws or drill/rout/bore/reaming machines just to name a few.

In general, the difference is that an NC machine requires the user to program in coordinates (x,y,z), while a CNC machine allows the used to import a CAD/CAM file or program a visual curve.

There are normally two types of machining they are 1) Manual machining 2) Automatic machining. Manual machining can be done on both conventional machines as well as in Automatic machines. In latest technology automatic machines are manufactured as CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machines. The machining on such machines are generally termed as CNC machining.

CNC machining is a technology that utilizes computer programs to control machine tools for automated processing. It uses pre written programs to guide the machine tool in various machining operations, such as milling, drilling, turning, etc. Compared to traditional manual or experiential operations.

A computer numerical control (CNC) machine operator and setter uses CNC equipment to create high-quality components. They read technical blueprints, make tool selections based on those blueprints, and then program CNC machines to carry out those jobs. Expert CNC machinists keep a close eye on the work in progress, making fine-tuned modifications as needed to guarantee precision and high quality. They use sophisticated measuring equipment to check the dimensions of finished products. CNC machinists may also be responsible for machine upkeep and fixing any problems that arise. They are masters in accurately and precisely fabricating products according to blueprints.

The abbreviation CNCstands for Computer Numeric Controllers, which are automated milling devices that make industrial components without any direct human assistance. Such devices allow the computer to dictate the moves a machine makes to perform a cutting function.

There are basically five different types of CNC machines:

CNC Plasma Cutting Machine

CNC Laser Cutting Machine

CNC Milling Machine

CNC Router Machine

CNC Lathe Machine

These are just a few of the different types of CNC machines. There are lots of other things that you will enjoy reading about.

A CNC lathe is a computerized Lathe, CNC is short for Computer Numeric Control.

The Lathe uses information provided by a PLC or PC, a CNC is programmed using CAD/ CAM programs like Solidworks and AutoCAD for the drawing process and MasterCAM or LazyCAM to generate tool paths and "G-code".

The "G-Code" made with the CAM software is then loaded into a Machine software Like "GRBL" or "EMC".

Generally a CNC Lathe will have three plains of movement, one to move the cutting insert into the work, another to move the tool along the material being worked and another to move the tail stock into the material being worked.

Any lathe can be converted into a CNC machine, and can be converted for under a couple hundred dollars.

Normally there are several job titles associated with a cnc machine as cnc programmer, cnc setter, cnc operator.

Sometimes these are titles are associated to a single personal in a cnc machine workshop, but in some places every job is done by a distinct personals.

But normally cnc setter and cnc operator jobs are sometimes titled as cnc machinist.

But sometimes only cnc operators are called cnc machinist.

cnc machinist job in cnc machine workshop is to machine the components.

How is a CNC programmer different than a CNC machine operator?

A CNC programmer is supposed to create the programs that the CNC machine operator uses to create components with a CNC machine. Sometimes the operators know more than the programmers. Different machines read different types of programs and are capable of doing different things. The programmer should know this before creating a program and they do this by using programming software (maybe), and the drawings of the components that require manufacturing.

Is being a CNC machinist hard?

A CNC machinist does not exist. The following are the positions regarding CNC machine tools.CNC ProgrammerCNC SetterCNC OperatorCNC Programmer - This is the hard part. Usually, a CNC programmer is a qualified or experienced machinist or turner. One has to understand the principals of machining to be able to write a program for machining on a CNC machine tool.CNC Setter - The CNC Setter is the person who would get the program from the programmer and install it on the CNC. Her would then set the machine up and get it ready for operation. The setter also needs a good background in machining or turning.CNC Operator - This is the easiest part of the job and only a good understanding of measuring instruments are necessary. The programmer probably has the hardest part of the job. The setter second and the operator the easiest. Despite having the easiest part of the job, the operator's importance to the operation is significant. He is the first person to identify incorrect dimensions of the machined component. He has to notify the setter or QC inspector if the machined workpiece is out of spec. If he fails to do so, a batch of scrap components could be produced wasting a lot of time and money. Usually, depending on the size, complexity and cost of the machined component, the operator has to take one out of every specified amount to the QC inspector for precise measuring to confirm its conformity to the drawing. In many instances, the programmer is the setter too. In others, the setter is the operator. There are instances where the programmer does the programming, setting, and is the operator of the machine.

What do CNC operators do?

A CNC operator, as the name suggests operates a CNC (computer numerical control) machine, usually this includes loading and unloading workpieces, checking workpieces, setting program datums, setting up jigs and fixtures, replacing worn or broken tooling, cleaning swarf from the machine and basic machine maintenance. Some operators also do programming although this is usually limited to altering a program to suit the tools being used; for example altering a program to give the correct drill depth after changing the drill. The exact duties of a CNC operator varies from one machine shop to another. A CNC programmer actually writes the program that runs the machine although this job is increasingly done by software.
