Darwin's theory of evolution is basically 'Survival of the Fittest" or "Natural selection." Genetic mutations occur in every species. Sometimes these are beneficial. For example a calf born more muscular than the rest will be more likely to mate and consequently pass on his genes to his

Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Short and memorable explanation.

Natural selection is the nonrandom survival and reproductive success of randomly varying individual organisms.

Darwin put forth the ideas that species change and all life shares a common ancestor. In other words, all of life can be represented as a bifurcating tree in the same way that an individual's genealogy can (i.e. a family tree). The reason for all of the different species, or kinds, could be explained as the product of natural selection. Natural selection occurs when there is variation for some trait in a population. If some variants are better able to persist better than others, than that variation will increase in frequency in the population. That alone, however, is not enough for evolution to occur. For evolution to happen, the traits and the variations must be hertiable, or passed from one generation to the next. Eventually, enough evolution could happen to cause a split in the lineage, which would give rise to two species.

Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection can also be expressed as a formal argument:

If there is variation in a population for some phenotypic trait(s),

if those phenotypic traits are at all heritable,

and if different variants leave different numbers of offspring in succeeding generations,

then evolution by natural selection will occur and traits will be optimized for the historical environment.
