Answer
Edgar Allen Poe is famous for both his gothic horror writing and the gothic horror of his life. He wrote stories famous for their unusual endings, one of which was initially banned from publication because the bad guy got away with it in the end ("The Cask of Amontillado"). In his life, he spent some time in the US Army, married his 13 year old cousin, became interested in cryptography, is widely believed to have buried a treasure and hidden clues in a story (The Gold Bug) and eventually died young of tuberculosis.
