His book royalties total over 5MM GBP, he's got about the same from the films based on the books. There's some licensing and merchandising that may get 500,000 GBP. He holds a royal title and is a landowner. So all told, he has about 10-15 mm GBP at the end of the day as a starting figure.

J.R.R. Tolkien received an initial advance of around £1,500 for "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which was considered substantial at the time. He also earned royalties from book sales, which significantly boosted his total earnings from the series.

JRR Tolkien died in 1973. His estate has been receiving all of the royalties from the books sales. The movie rights were sold long ago.

Only film rights to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings were sold. The estate recently settled a lawsuit regarding unpaid royalties which were part of the conditions of sale. Many of the royalties are paid to the Tolkien Trust which is a registered charity in the UK. The Tolkien Trust supports many educational and humanitarian charites worldwide. Their accounts are published on the UK Charities' comission website.

Roald Dahl attempted to be a private person. He did not share his finances publicly. It can be assumed though that he made a lot of money off his books.

No, he was not rich. Most of the wealth came long after he passed away and his estate is very wealthy. He never understood his fame and the awe his readers held of him.
