The L82 engine has more horse power than the L48. It also has 4 bolt mains, instead of 2 bolt mains, different cam, intake, carb, exhaust manifolds, and a number of other things where different between the two engines over the years. The biggest way to tell the difference is when you fire up a L82 it will sound like a solid lifter motor, where the L48 wont. The L82 is a looser motor which means it can handle higher RPM, the biggest problem with L82's is if they are not maintained with good oil, and service correctly you will blow it up alot easier than a L48.
