Secondary economic activities equal industry and manufacturing. As such, Mexican industries include:

  1. Construction: 25.6%
  2. Metallic products (iron, steel), machinery and equipment (aerospace, motor vehicles): 19.9%
  3. Food and Beverages: 19.2%
  4. Chemical products, oil products and plastics: 9.8%
  5. Electricity, gas and water production: 5.3%
  6. Non-metallic products (cement, glass): 4.5%
  7. Textiles and textile products: 4.5%
  8. Other industries (basic metal refining, paper and paper products, wood products, optical and consumer products): 11.2%

All these activities add up 26.6% of Mexico's Gross Domestic Product - the percentage dedicated to industrial activities - or USD$411.8 billion out of a total GDP of USD$1,548 billion for 2008.

Among the many types of industry and the products they manufacture, Mexico includes the following, with some representative companies:

  • Food and Beverages - Sigma Alimentos, Gamesa, Grupo Bimbo.
  • Aerospace - Tecnologia Aeroespacial Mexicana (TAM), Hydra Technologies.
  • Electronics - Lanix, Mabe Mexico.
  • Tobacco - Delicados.
  • Chemicals - Alpek, Cydsa, Mexichem, Vitro.
  • Iron and Steel - Altos Hornos de Mexico, Grupo Acerero del Norte.
  • Petroleum - Pemex.
  • Biotechnology - Biotecnologia Ambiental, Laboratorios Silanes.
  • Mining - Grupo Mexico, Hylsamex.
  • Shipbuilding - Bender Shipbuilding, Servicios Navales e Industriales.
  • Electricity - Comision Federal de Electricidad.
  • Defense Products - Industrias Militares Mexicanas (Mexican Defense Secretariat).
  • Textiles - PYOSA, Scappino, Andrea.
  • Clothing - Flexi, Milano, Vicky Form.
  • Motor vehicles and parts - Electro Optica, Grupo Bocar, Industrias Automotrices LODI.
  • Computers - HP Mexico, IBM Mexico.
  • Consumer Durables - Industrias Marino, Grupo Mabe.
  • Information Technologies - Softek, Neoris.

Note: some of these industries are subsidiaries of foreign companies (for example, Hewlett-Packard Mexico) but these assemble or manufacture products for such brands in Mexican soil. These are commonly known as maquiladoras.
