Answer
Finally someone asks something I know about. You see narcissism isn't just a word or a question, no, for some it is alternative life-style. Allow me to elaborate.
To begin with, there once was a boy who was so beautiful that even the gods wanted to have sex with him. One in particular, but she's not important really, any way one day this crazy goddess, Echo was the crazy girl's first and last name. Well one day, she spotted this beautiful boy as he was doing his usual boy things in woods. Like catching frogs, and building dams in the streams, and just really enjoying the beautiful world. This was long before some idiot thought shopping malls all over earth's half acre would be just great. Anyway, Echo had a big problem, she could only repeat what she heard. If this wasn't enough to give anyone cause for concern, the crazy goddess started chasingthis boy through the woods. Not immediately of course, just after the deranged sex crazed goddess kept repeating his questions and so forth that he asked of her when she showed up all of the sudden in the forest. Well, it wigged him out, quite naturally. He finally figured she was a nut case and so he ran off. Who can blame him? I would have. Crazy girl, she might have just acted mute and enticed him with some cool stuff. Echo might have been a goddess, but she wasn't too bright. Well this boy, who had finally lost this sex crazed immortal, rested by a pond, and after a while he went to have a drink. Now he had seen himself before, but not for a long time had he seen his reflection and never so clearly as in this crystal clear pond. According to the goddess, who finally found him again about this time, the boy only stared in to the pond at his own reflection. He would try to kiss the reflection. Eventually, she gave up on him and went off to find someone else. The boys name was Narcissus, and the gods went around and spread a myth that he sat there in love with own reflection until he became a plant. Hence, plants of the genus "Narcissus."
This is all a big fat lie, of course, told to save the reputation of the crazy sex starved goddes Echo, who never should have been chasing a boy, let alone a mortal. The truth is quite different. Narcissus knew he was beautiful, but so were a lot of other men. Well, he just wasn't interested in what the female body had to offer. He tried to handle things the best way he knew how. You really did not want to offend a god, and never a sex-crazed goddess. That would have been really dangerous, so he tried to give her some visual clues by kissing his own reflection. Unfortunately, Echo was like most straight people, thick as the tree trunks she had chased Narcissus around. But there was a happy ending for Narcissus. After he ditched Echo, he had a chance encounter with a bunch of soldiers who were fleeing the army of a great warrior. They figured he would be worth something, so they forced him to come with them as their slave.
No sooner had the soldiers and the seemingly unfortunate Narcissus arrived at the soldier camp than the King of the fleeing army rode by and spotted Narcissus. When the King found out that Narcissus was a captured slave, he immediately had the boy cleaned up and given a fine horse to ride and new, but enticing, clothes to wear. With that, he was sent off with a body guard to the Camp of the attacking King with a peace treaty. Narcissus didn't realize he was the peace offering, nor that the great king he was being sent to was none other than Alexander The Great. Well, that was that, and he spent the next good part of his life in Alexander's tent. He changed his name, of course, for fear that Echo would find him, but she never did. A good book about the life of Narcissus was written by legendary author, Mary Renault. "The Persian Boy," written by one of the worlds greatest experts on the life of Alexander the Great. Just remember, Narcissus had to make up a bunch of stuff about his life, so Echo would not find him. After all, gods are immortal. So you have to remember that his fictional name was not Narcissus, but Bagoas, which is what he used the rest of his life. Otherwise, it's all pretty much like I just told you.
So there you have it. Its a really strange story. Narcissism is supposed to be an un-natural love of one's own body. That's just a bunch of hooey. Narcissism is all about being who you are and respecting your own self enough to allow yourself to love yourself. Where's the harm in that? I say a lot more self love and a lot less reproduction would be very healthy for the entire planet!
